Most plastic gifts are made from non-renewable petroleum-based materials and can take hundreds of years to break down in landfill. Wood is a renewable resource when it comes from a well-managed source, and untreated wood biodegrades naturally. The bigger practical difference is longevity: a well-made wooden keepsake can last decades, while a lot of plastic novelty gifts are discarded within a year.

What to Check Before You Buy an "Eco-Friendly" Wooden Gift

"Eco-friendly" on its own isn't a verifiable claim — it's worth asking two specific questions. First, what material is it actually made from, and is that stated clearly rather than left vague? Second, is there a certification you can check, such as an FSC certificate number, or is it just a general "sustainable" label with nothing behind it?

We're specific about what each of our materials is and isn't:

• FSC-certified Moso bamboo — certificate RINA-COC-001256, independently verified.
• FSC-certified oak veneered MDF — FSC-certified, sourced from a certified supplier, though it doesn't carry an individual certificate number.
• Birch plywood and natural slate — no sustainability claim made for either.
