Acrylic vs Wood: Which Should You Choose for Signs and Badges?
Share
For indoor signs, name badges and table displays, wood is usually the better choice; for clear, brightly coloured or permanent outdoor signs, acrylic is. Wood has a renewable main raw material, engraves permanently and looks warmer; acrylic is waterproof, available in clear and bright colours, and lasts outdoors. Here is how they compare on the points that decide a real order.
Acrylic vs wood: quick comparison
| Factor | Acrylic (PMMA) | Wood and bamboo |
|---|---|---|
| Raw material | Plastic made from oil and gas. | Mainly renewable wood or bamboo fibre. |
| Outdoors | Waterproof and weather-resistant. | Depends on the material. Oak veneered MDF is indoor only; 5mm bamboo can go outside. |
| Colour and clarity | Clear, frosted or bright colours; can be printed in full colour. | The natural wood tone, with a darker engraved mark. |
| Wear | Hard but scratches; printed or applied graphics can wear. | Engraving is cut into the surface, so it cannot peel off. |
| Weight | Heavier than wood at the same thickness. | Light at 3–4mm, which suits badges worn all day. |
| End of life | Recyclable in principle, rarely collected; does not biodegrade. | Solid wood breaks down; resin-bonded boards are mostly burned for energy. |
When acrylic is the better choice
- Permanent outdoor signs in full weather, especially where they will be soaked regularly.
- Clear or glass-effect signs, such as door and window panels or stand-off wall plaques.
- Full-colour branding, where a logo has to appear in its exact brand colours.
- Signs that get soaked or hosed down, such as outdoor pool surrounds and wash-down areas in commercial kitchens.
We don't make acrylic, so if one of these is your brief, a local sign maker is the right supplier.
When wood is the better choice
- Name badges worn all day: light, comfortable, and the engraved name cannot rub off.
- Indoor door, room and policy signs, where you want the sign to look like part of the building rather than an add-on.
- Table and counter signs such as QR code, WiFi and reserved signs, which are handled constantly.
- Organisations reducing plastic for a policy, an accreditation such as Green Key, or a tender.
Which wood?
- FSC-certified oak veneered MDF: the most consistent engraving and the lowest price. Indoor use only, and it must stay dry.
- FSC-certified Moso bamboo (certificate BV-COC-190523): water-resistant, so it suits steamy or damp indoor areas. Our 5mm range can be fixed outdoors.
- Solid oak: our 20mm "Block" range of freestanding signs, for reception desks and counters.

The environmental difference in one paragraph
Acrylic is a plastic made from fossil feedstock that does not biodegrade and is rarely collected for recycling in the UK. Wood and bamboo come mainly from renewable sources, and chain-of-custody certification lets you check where they came from. Resin-bonded boards such as MDF have honest limits at end of life too. The detail is in is acrylic sustainable? and is MDF sustainable?

Frequently asked questions
Should I choose acrylic or wood for business signage?
Wood for most indoor signs, name badges and table signs; acrylic for permanent outdoor signs, clear panels or full-colour branding.
Is wood more durable than acrylic?
Indoors, an engraved wooden sign lasts as long as you need it, because the engraving cannot peel or fade. Outdoors in full weather, acrylic is more durable than most wood.
Can wooden signs go outside?
Some can. Oak veneered MDF is for indoor use only. Our 5mm bamboo can be fixed outdoors, and 3mm bamboo copes outside only when tied securely against a solid structure. Bamboo left outdoors will green unless cleaned regularly.
Are wooden name badges lighter than acrylic?
Generally, yes. Our badges are 3–4mm wood or bamboo, which is light enough to wear all day.
Do you make acrylic signs?
No. We only work in wood, bamboo and natural slate.
