Dogs Welcome Wooden Sign

Dog Friendly Signs: A Guide for Cafes, Pubs, Shops and Holiday Lets

A dog friendly sign does more than state a policy — it changes the decision someone makes before they reach your door. A walker on the street with their dog is making a split-second choice about whether to come in. A well-placed sign is what gets them through the door instead of walking past.

This guide covers the sign formats that work, what wording to use, where to position them, and the difference between signs for businesses and signs for homes. For specific product recommendations by venue type, see our dog friendly signs buying guide.

Why Dog Friendly Signs Matter

An estimated 13 million dogs live in the UK. Their owners make location decisions based on which venues welcome them. Cafes, pubs, shops and accommodation that are genuinely dog friendly but don't communicate it clearly are invisible to the audience that would choose them specifically because of that policy.

A dog friendly sign is the minimum communication needed to capture that decision. A good one — the right wording, the right material, positioned correctly — does it better than a hand-written note in the window or a vague social media bio.

Dog Friendly Sign Formats

Freestanding Dog Friendly Signs

A freestanding sign sits on a counter, bar top, cafe table or reception desk. It's visible at close range — the point at which someone has already come in and is deciding whether to stay. The most effective version confirms the welcome and removes any remaining uncertainty: Well Behaved Dogs Welcome, or Dogs Welcome — Water Bowl Available.

Freestanding signs can be moved — brought out during summer, positioned near the entrance, moved to a table when space is tight. More versatile than a wall-mounted sign for most cafe and pub environments.

Wall-Mounted Dog Friendly Signs

A wall or door sign is the right format when you want permanent outdoor visibility — on a door, a wall beside an entrance, or in a window. Someone passing on the pavement with a dog can see it before they decide to stop. The message needs to be readable at 3–4 metres: larger text, clear contrast, simple wording.

Dog Friendly Open and Closed Signs

A double-sided open and closed sign with a dog friendly message is a useful format for businesses that want to combine two functions in one sign. One side signals that the business is open; the other shows the dog friendly message or a closed sign. Hung in a door or window, it communicates both pieces of information without needing two separate signs.

Dog Friendly Signs for Holiday Lets and Home Use

Holiday let owners and homeowners use dog friendly signs differently from venues. A sign at a holiday let property signals to arriving guests that dogs are welcome — useful when the booking confirmation says pet-friendly but the property itself doesn't visually confirm it on arrival. Popular wording for holiday lets: Dogs Welcome, Furry Friends Welcome, Pets Welcome.

Home signs work similarly for people who want to communicate their position to visitors: All Guests Must Be Approved by the Dog, Dogs Welcome, Humans Tolerated, Our Home Is Ruled by Dogs. These are less functional than venue signs but serve the same social-signalling purpose in a domestic setting.

What Wording Works for Dog Friendly Signs

The wording you choose depends on your audience and setting:

For cafes and restaurants

  • Dogs Welcome — simple, unambiguous
  • Well Behaved Dogs Welcome — signals a standard without being unwelcoming
  • Dogs Welcome in Our Outdoor Area — manages expectations if the policy is outdoor-only
  • Dogs Welcome — Water Bowl Available — adds useful practical information

For pubs

  • Dog Friendly Pub — direct, widely understood
  • Dogs and Their Owners Welcome — slightly warmer
  • Well Behaved Dogs Welcome at the Bar — sets clear expectations

For shops and retail

  • Dogs Welcome — concise
  • Well Behaved Dogs Welcome in Store — specifies the setting

For holiday lets and accommodation

  • Dogs Welcome — confirms the booking information on arrival
  • Furry Friends Welcome — warmer, slightly less corporate
  • Pet Friendly Property — broader if both dogs and other pets are welcome

For home use

  • All Visitors Must Be Approved by the Dog
  • Dogs Welcome, Humans Tolerated
  • Our Home Is Run by the Dog
  • Furry Friends Always Welcome Here

Where to Put a Dog Friendly Sign

Position determines whether the sign works. These are the most effective placements by setting:

  • Cafes and restaurants — in the window at eye level, on the door, or on the counter near the till. Outdoor seating areas benefit from a second sign at the point someone chooses where to sit.
  • Pubs — on the main entrance door, at the bar, and near the entrance to any dog-specific area (garden, snug).
  • Shops — on the front door or in the window closest to the entrance.
  • Holiday lets — at the entrance to the property, or inside near the door where arriving guests see it immediately.
  • Homes — on the front door or inside the entrance hall.

Materials: Why Wood Works for Dog Friendly Signs

A laser-engraved wooden dog friendly sign communicates something different from a printed sticker or a laminated paper notice. The material choice signals something about the business: it has considered the sign rather than grabbed whatever was cheapest. For cafes, delis and boutique shops that have invested in their interior, a wooden sign fits the aesthetic. For holiday lets that describe themselves as characterful, it's consistent with the brand.

Our dog friendly signs are made from 4mm oak veneered MDF — laser-engraved, not printed. The text and any design elements won't fade or peel. Available in freestanding and wall-mounted formats, in multiple sizes.

Dog Friendly Signs and Legal Requirements

There is no legal requirement in England, Scotland or Wales to display a dog friendly sign. Equally, there is no requirement to allow dogs — the decision is entirely at the discretion of the venue. Food businesses must comply with Food Standards Agency hygiene regulations, which generally require that animals be kept away from food preparation and service areas. A dog friendly cafe that allows dogs in a seating area separated from the kitchen is not in breach of food hygiene regulations, but should take reasonable precautions.

Guide dogs and other registered assistance dogs have a legal right of access to any public space under the Equality Act 2010, regardless of a venue's dog policy. A No Dogs policy does not extend to assistance dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a dog friendly sign say?

For most venues, Dogs Welcome or Well Behaved Dogs Welcome is sufficient. If your policy is outdoor-only, say so: Dogs Welcome in Our Outdoor Area. Adding a practical detail like Water Bowl Available is useful for cafes and restaurants. Keep the wording simple — the sign should be readable in a glance.

Can I personalise a dog friendly sign with my business name?

Yes. Most of our dog friendly signs can be personalised with your business name, logo or custom wording. Upload your logo using the button on the product page. Black-and-white artwork engraves most cleanly.

What size dog friendly sign do I need?

For outdoor visibility (door or window), choose a larger size so the sign is readable from 3–4 metres. For indoor use (counter, bar top), a smaller freestanding sign works well. Product pages list the available sizes — if you're unsure, order the mid-range size first.

Are dogs allowed in cafes legally?

There is no law preventing dogs from entering cafes in England, Scotland or Wales — it is at the venue's discretion. Food hygiene regulations require reasonable separation between dogs and food preparation areas, but a seating area where dogs accompany owners is generally compliant. Guide dogs and assistance dogs have a statutory right of entry to any premises under the Equality Act 2010.

Do you make signs for holiday lets that allow dogs?

Yes. Our dog friendly signs work well for holiday lets — a Dogs Welcome sign at the entrance confirms the policy on arrival, which guests appreciate after a long journey with an animal. Personalised with the property name if needed.
