How to Check a Name Badge Sustainability Claim Is Real

How to check a supplier's sustainability claim

1. Ask which part the claim covers: the badge, the lanyard or the packaging.
2. Ask for the FSC certificate number and look it up on the FSC public certificate database.
3. Check the certificate is valid and covers the material in question, such as bamboo or wood panels.
4. Ask who holds the certificate. A supplier that is not itself certified can say its material is FSC-certified, but the claim should be about the material rather than the finished product.
5. Treat unquantified claims, such as "carbon neutral" with no named standard, as marketing until evidence is supplied.

What makes a name badge a lower-impact choice?

It comes down to three things: what the badge is made from, how long it lasts, and whether the material can be traced.

Material. Plastic badges, the standard option in most corporate procurement, are typically PVC or ABS, both made from petroleum. A wooden or bamboo badge is made from a renewable plant material instead.

Durability. A laser-engraved badge does not fade, peel or need reprinting. The engraving is cut into the material rather than printed onto it, so a wooden badge ordered once outlasts a run of printed badges replaced every year.

Traceability. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is the internationally recognised standard for responsibly managed forests and forest products, and a certificate number is what makes a claim checkable.

Our claim, checked the same way

Bamboo. Our bamboo name badges are made from FSC-certified Moso bamboo (certificate RINA-COC-001256). You can look the number up on the FSC database and quote it in procurement records. Moso bamboo is a grass that reaches harvestable maturity in three to five years and regrows from its root system, so it does not need replanting after harvest.

Oak. Our oak name badges are made from FSC-certified 4mm oak veneered MDF: a thin layer of real oak bonded to an MDF core, which gives a consistent engraving surface at a fraction of the weight and cost of solid oak. It is FSC-certified, but it does not come with a separate certificate number for us to quote.

Who holds the certificate. Cherry Grove Craft is not itself an FSC certificate holder; the certification sits with our supply chain. That is why we describe the material as FSC-certified rather than putting an FSC logo on the finished badge.

If your procurement policy requires a certificate number on file, choose bamboo. If the brief is to move away from plastic to a certified, renewable material, either meets it.

Sizes and fastenings

Bamboo name badges and oak name badges both come in eight sizes and shapes, from 65 x 15mm to an 85 x 40mm racket shape, including a 50mm round and a 70 x 40mm oval, with pin, magnetic or pin-and-clip fastening. Are wooden badges more durable than plastic?

In most environments, yes. The engraving on a wooden badge is permanent: it cannot peel, fade or wash off. The badge itself is rigid and does not flex or crack under normal daily wear.

The comparison that matters for procurement is total cost of ownership rather than unit cost. A set of engraved badges that lasts as long as the people wearing them is a different calculation from printed badges reprinted every year. For events where names change each time, a reusable badge with a blackboard name area avoids single-use badges altogether.

Lanyards

A wooden badge on a virgin polyester lanyard is only half a solution. Our eco lanyards are made from recycled PET (rPET). They are not biodegradable, but they use recycled rather than new plastic, and every one has a breakaway safety clip.

• Your logo file: black and white artwork engraves most clearly. Vector (SVG, EPS, PDF) or a high-resolution PNG. Colour logos are usually convertible.
• A list of names and job titles, one per line in the personalisation box, or a spreadsheet of names where the listing has a names spreadsheet field.
• Your chosen size and fastening, selected from the product options.
