How to Check a Name Badge Sustainability Claim Is Real

If your organisation is working towards a sustainability brief — whether that is an ESG commitment, a green procurement policy or simply a decision to stop buying plastic — name badges are one of the easiest swaps to make. They are small, ordered regularly, and the difference between a plastic badge and a wooden or bamboo one is visible every time a member of staff wears it.

This guide covers the material options, what the certifications actually mean, and what to look for when sourcing sustainable name badges for your team or event.

What makes a name badge sustainable?

Sustainability in name badges comes down to three things: what the badge is made from, how long it lasts, and what happens to it at end of life.

Material. Plastic badges — the standard option for most corporate procurement — are typically made from PVC or ABS. Both are petroleum-derived, neither biodegrades, and most end up in landfill. A wooden or bamboo badge is made from a renewable resource, biodegrades at end of life, and carries no microplastic risk.

Durability. A laser-engraved badge does not fade, peel or need reprinting. The engraving is cut into the material, not printed onto it, which means a wooden badge ordered once outlasts a run of printed plastic badges replaced annually.

Certifications. Not all wood or bamboo products are equal. The material source matters. FSC certification (Forest Stewardship Council) is the internationally recognised standard for responsibly managed forests and forest products.

Bamboo name badges — FSC certified

Our bamboo name badges are made from FSC-certified Moso bamboo (certificate RINA-COC-001256). Moso bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants on earth — it reaches harvestable maturity in three to five years, compared with decades for most timber species. It does not require replanting after harvest because it regenerates from its root system.

The FSC certification on our bamboo confirms that the supply chain from forest to finished product has been independently audited. For organisations that need to evidence sustainable procurement, the certificate number (RINA-COC-001256) is verifiable through the FSC's public database.

Oak name badges — what the material actually is

Our oak name badges are made from 4mm oak veneered MDF — a thin layer of real oak bonded to an MDF core. This is the standard specification for laser-engraved wooden badges and gives a consistent, high-quality engraving surface with the appearance and feel of solid wood at a fraction of the weight and cost.

Oak veneered MDF is not FSC-certified in our supply chain, so if your procurement policy specifically requires FSC documentation, bamboo is the right choice. If your requirement is simply to move away from plastic to a natural, renewable material, oak veneered MDF meets that brief.

Are wooden badges more durable than plastic?

In most environments, yes. The engraving on a wooden badge is permanent — it cannot peel, fade or wash off. The badge itself is rigid and does not flex or crack under normal daily wear.

The comparison that matters for procurement is total cost of ownership rather than unit cost. A set of laser-engraved wooden badges ordered once and lasting the lifetime of the employee or event is a different calculation from printed plastic badges reprinted annually.

For events where badges will be used once and discarded, bamboo is the more defensible choice — it will biodegrade rather than persist in landfill.

Sustainable lanyards

A wooden badge on a polyester lanyard is not a fully sustainable solution. Our eco lanyards are made from recycled PET (rPET) material — physically recycled plastic bottles processed into lanyard webbing. They are not biodegradable, but they divert plastic from waste streams and have a significantly lower carbon footprint than virgin polyester.

All our badge-and-lanyard combinations use eco lanyards as standard. For organisations that want a fully natural option, cotton lanyards are available on request.

Bulk ordering and pricing

Bulk discounts apply automatically at checkout from 20 units — no code required. The discount tiers are: 10% from 20 units, 15% from 50, 20% from 100, 25% from 250, 30% from 500, 35% from 1,000.

What to send us

For a bulk badge order with logo, you need:

• Your logo file — black and white artwork gives the clearest engraving result. Vector (SVG, EPS, PDF) or high-resolution PNG. Colour logos are usually convertible — send what you have and we will assess it.
• A list of names and job titles, one per line, in the personalisation box at checkout.
• Your chosen size and fastening type selected from the product variants.

We engrave every badge individually. For a set of 50 badges with different names, each one is engraved to the exact name supplied.

Can you provide an FSC certificate for our procurement records?
Yes — our bamboo supply carries FSC certificate RINA-COC-001256, verifiable through the FSC public certificate database. Contact us if you need documentation for your procurement file.

Are the badges suitable for outdoor events?
Both oak and bamboo badges are for indoor use only. For outdoor events with exposure to rain, a printed alternative with waterproof lamination is more appropriate.

Can we have a mix of sizes in one order?
Yes — add each size variant separately to your basket. Bulk discount tiers apply per product line.

Do you offer bamboo lanyards?
Bamboo lanyard webbing is not currently available in our supply chain. Our eco lanyards use rPET recycled material. Contact us if you have a specific requirement and we will advise on alternatives.

How do wooden badges compare to metal engraved badges on sustainability?
Metal badges — typically brass or aluminium — are recyclable at end of life, which is an advantage over plastic. However, metal production is energy-intensive. Wood and bamboo have a lower embodied carbon per unit and are biodegradable. For most sustainability briefs, wood or bamboo is the stronger choice.
