What Are Wooden Name Badges? Everything Businesses Need to Know Before Ordering

If you're looking for name badges for your business, school, hotel or event, wooden name badges are worth understanding properly before you order. There are more options than most people realise — and the wrong choice on material, size or attachment type can mean badges that don't work for your team.

This guide covers everything: what wooden name badges are made from, how to choose the right size and attachment, what to put on them, how bulk ordering works, and which sectors they suit best.

What are wooden name badges made from?

Despite the name, most wooden name badges aren't made from solid wood. The two most common materials are oak veneered MDF and bamboo — and the difference matters.

Oak veneered MDF is a sheet of real oak veneer bonded to an MDF core. It's lightweight, consistent, takes laser engraving extremely well and produces crisp, clean results. It's the most widely used material for professional name badges because it balances appearance, durability and cost effectively. Not suitable for outdoor use or damp environments.

Bamboo is a natural grass that's harder and more moisture-resistant than oak veneered MDF. It has a slightly different grain pattern and engraves with a warmer, more golden tone. It's a good choice for businesses that want to emphasise eco credentials, or for environments where badges may encounter occasional moisture — hospitality settings, for example. Bamboo badges are typically slightly more expensive than oak.

Both materials are laser-engraved rather than printed. That means the design is cut into the surface of the wood rather than applied on top — it won't fade, peel or scratch off. A well-made engraved wooden name badge will look the same in five years as it does on day one.

Sizes and what they mean in practice

Name badges come in a range of sizes, and the right choice depends on how much information you need to display and how close people typically are when they read them.

Common sizes for wooden name badges:

  • 65 × 15mm — very slim, name-only badge. Unobtrusive but limited space. Suits minimalist uniforms.
  • 75 × 20mm — slim but readable. Good for name and job title in smaller text.
  • 75 × 25mm — the most popular general-purpose size. Comfortable for name, job title and a small logo.
  • 75 × 30mm — more space for detail. Good for name, title, department and logo without feeling crowded.
  • 75 × 40mm — larger format. Suits events, conferences and roles where the badge needs to be readable from further away.
  • 75 × 33mm / 76 × 38mm — popular for delegate and event badges. More vertical space for multiple lines of text.

A useful rule of thumb: if the badge will be read at arm's length or less (retail, hospitality, office), a smaller size works fine. If people need to read it from across a table or room (events, conferences, trade shows), go larger.

Attachment types explained

This is the detail most first-time buyers overlook, and it makes a real difference to how the badge is used day to day.

Pin only — a single pin fastening on the back, like a traditional badge. Simple and secure. The drawback is pin holes in clothing, which matters for some uniforms and fabrics.

Pin and clip — combines a pin with a butterfly clip. More secure than pin only, and the clip helps keep the badge flat. Still leaves pin holes but gives better stability on thicker fabrics.

Magnetic — two magnets: one on the badge, one on the inside of the clothing. No pin holes, no damage to fabric. The most popular choice for professional settings and anywhere staff wear premium uniforms. Worth noting that magnetic attachments are not suitable for anyone with a pacemaker.

For most business use, magnetic is the right choice. For events and conferences where badges are worn once and cost is a priority, pin and clip is a practical option.

What to put on a wooden name badge

The standard layout is name, job title and logo. But there's more flexibility than that, and what you choose depends on the context.

For retail and hospitality: first name and job title is usually enough. Customers want to know who they're talking to, not their full professional biography. A small company logo adds a branded touch without cluttering the badge.

For corporate and office environments: full name, job title, department and company logo. If the team is large or spread across sites, adding a site or team identifier helps too.

For events and conferences: full name, job title, company name and sometimes a QR code linking to a LinkedIn profile or digital business card. Double-sided badges are useful here — contact details or a QR code on the reverse.

For schools and education: name and role (Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Visitor, Governor). School logo on each badge creates a consistent, professional look for staff.

For healthcare and care homes: first name and role. Keep it simple and readable. Magnetic attachments are important here to protect clothing and maintain a professional appearance.

The free design service we offer means you don't need to produce a finished artwork file. Upload your logo and describe what you want — we'll handle the layout.

Oak vs bamboo — which should you choose?

For most businesses, oak veneered MDF is the right choice. It's slightly cheaper, engraves with excellent contrast and gives a clean, professional result. The vast majority of our business orders use oak.

Choose bamboo if:

  • Your brand has a strong sustainability or eco focus and you want the badge material to reflect that
  • Your team works in environments with occasional moisture exposure
  • You prefer the slightly warmer, more natural tone that bamboo engraving produces
  • You're already using bamboo for other branded items and want consistency

Both materials are responsibly chosen. Both are laser-engraved. The difference is subtle but worth considering if it aligns with your brand values.

Bulk ordering — how it works and what to expect

Wooden name badges are almost always ordered in bulk, and there are a few things worth knowing before you place a large order.

Discounts apply automatically. At Cherry Grove Craft, bulk discounts are applied at checkout without needing a code: 10% from 20 units, 15% from 50, 20% from 100, 25% from 250, 30% from 500, 35% from 1,000.

Each badge can have different engraving. List the names, job titles and any individual details in the personalisation box at checkout — one per line. We engrave each badge individually. You don't need to place separate orders.

Made to order means no stock risk. We don't hold pre-made badges in stock. Every order is made fresh, which means you only pay for what you need and every badge is exactly as specified.

Lead times. Current dispatch times are shown at checkout. For large orders with a specific event or start date, it's worth ordering with some lead time or getting in touch beforehand so we can confirm the schedule.

Reorders are straightforward. If you need to add new staff badges to an existing order design, just reference the original order and we'll match it.

Which sectors use wooden name badges most?

Wooden name badges suit any professional environment where a standard plastic badge would feel out of place. They're particularly popular with:

Hotels and hospitality — front of house staff, reception teams, spa and wellness staff. The natural material fits the aesthetic of boutique and independent properties better than generic plastic badges. Magnetic attachment is standard in hospitality to protect uniforms.

Retail and boutiques — shop floor staff, personal shoppers, brand ambassadors. Wooden badges align with the trend toward natural materials in retail environments and help staff look approachable and professional.

Schools and education — teaching staff, support staff, visitors and governors. School logo badges help identify staff clearly to parents and pupils. We also make school leavers' gifts, rosettes and awards if you're looking for end-of-term products.

Charities and third sector — a sustainable badge material suits organisations with environmental values. Wooden badges also work well for volunteer identification at events.

Events and conferences — delegate badges, speaker badges, staff identification. Double-sided badges with QR codes are increasingly popular for networking events where sharing contact details digitally makes sense.

Healthcare and care homes — staff identification badges where a clear, readable name and role is important. Magnetic attachment protects uniforms and is preferred in most care settings.

QR code name badges — a newer option worth knowing about

For events, exhibitions and networking-heavy roles, QR code name badges are a step up from a standard engraved badge. The badge displays the wearer's name, job title and company logo — plus a QR code on the front or reverse that links to a digital business card, LinkedIn profile or company website.

Instead of exchanging paper business cards, a contact scans the badge and has everything they need instantly. It's a more sustainable and more effective alternative to traditional networking materials.

We make QR code name badges with eco lanyards in both single and double-sided versions.

How to order wooden name badges

The process is straightforward:

  4. Add to cart — bulk discounts apply automatically from 20 units

If you're ordering for the first time and want to check the quality before committing to a large order, you're welcome to order a small sample run first. Just get in touch if you have questions about design, sizing or lead times.
