Why these are printed, not engraved
Fire exit and escape signage has to follow strict colour and contrast standards (BS EN ISO 7010, BS 5499-4) so it reads instantly in an emergency, even through smoke or low light. That's a job for bold, regulation-colour printing — not wood grain, which naturally softens contrast.
It's exactly why we reserve our engraved oak for where craftsmanship genuinely adds something: everyday functional signage, hospitality touches, personalised business signs — and keep safety-critical signage printed and fully compliant. We do offer one engraved exception: our Fire Door Keep Shut sign in circular oak, a permanent secondary marker for premises that want one alongside their compliant signage.
How to use these signs
1. Fire doors
Use the blue mandatory sign only on a fire-resisting door identified by the fire risk assessment. Requirements vary, but signs are commonly fitted to both faces of self-closing fire doors across escape routes and communal areas.
2. Escape routes
Use a pictogram and the correct directional arrow. Text-only "Fire Exit" signs are not acceptable. Place the sign above the exit or where it stays clearly visible; add signs where the route or next exit is not obvious.
3. Assembly point
Place this sign at the safe muster location selected through the fire risk assessment. It must be visible and known to staff, residents and visitors. Do not create an assembly point that blocks access for emergency services.
Printing and display
Print at 100% on white paper or suitable durable media. The finished sign must be large enough for its viewing distance, securely fixed, clear, legible and adequately lit. Replace faded or damaged copies. Where your assessment specifies illuminated, photoluminescent, weatherproof or certified signage, use a suitable manufactured product.
This pack does not decide which signs your premises require. Follow the current fire risk assessment and the instructions of the responsible person, competent adviser, local authority or enforcing fire authority. Duties differ by nation and type of premises.
Frequently asked questions
Is this pack a substitute for a fire risk assessment?
No. It's a practical print-and-place resource for premises that already know, or are working through, what signage a fire risk assessment requires. Always follow the current assessment and the instructions of the responsible person or enforcing fire authority.
Which fire exit sign should I use?
Choose the arrow direction that matches the actual escape route from where the sign is viewed, and use a pictogram sign rather than a text-only one — text-only "Fire Exit" signs are not acceptable.
Can I use these as permanent signage?
Printed paper is fine for many premises, but where your risk assessment specifies illuminated, photoluminescent, weatherproof or certified signage, you'll need a suitable manufactured product instead.
Why don't you offer the fire exit and assembly point signs in engraved wood?
Because they're genuinely safer printed. Emergency wayfinding signage depends on exact regulation colours and maximum contrast to be read at a glance under stress — something a printed sign delivers more reliably than an engraved wood finish. We'd rather point you to the right material for the job than sell you wood where it isn't the safest choice.
Do you sell a permanent, engraved version of the fire door sign?
Yes — our Fire Door Keep Shut sign is available in circular oak, 100mm or 150mm.
