The Best Orbital Sander for a Laser Engraving Workshop: Why I Ended Up With a Mirka DEROS II

Sanding is part of the job in a laser engraving workshop. Whether it's preparing a piece of oak veneer before engraving, finishing a cut edge, or preparing a substrate for a client who wants a flawless surface, you'll spend real time behind a sander. Get the tool wrong and you'll know about it within an hour.

I went through three sanders before finding the right one. Here's the honest account of what I tried, why each fell short, and what I eventually landed on — and the dust extractor story that followed.

First: the DeWalt

DeWalt makes good tools. The sander wasn't the problem — the vibration was. After an extended session my fingers would start going numb, which isn't just uncomfortable, it's a genuine health concern. Vibration white finger is a recognised industrial condition and it's not something to push through. The DeWalt went.

Second: the Bosch Professional

A step up in quality and the vibration was considerably better. The Bosch Professional is a genuinely good sander — well-built, effective, reliable. The issue was weight. For short jobs it was fine. For long sanding sessions, the weight became tiring in a way that affected the quality of the finish and left me genuinely fatigued. Running a production workshop means long sessions are the norm, not the exception. A tool that works for twenty minutes but tires you out at forty isn't the right tool.

Third: the Mirka DEROS II

I came across the Mirka DEROS II at the Southampton Boat Show — not somewhere you'd necessarily expect to discover your next workshop tool, but the marine industry is serious about sanding and the demo was compelling. Light, fast, almost no vibration. I picked one up and have never looked back.

The Mirka DEROS II 5650 Orbital Sander takes 125mm and 150mm sandpaper, runs at 230V, and the 5.0mm orbit gives an aggressive cut without the aggressive vibration. It's the lightest sander I've used at this power level — genuinely comfortable for long sessions in a way neither of the previous tools were. It comes with a case, which matters when you're storing tools properly in a working workshop rather than a hobby shed.

It's also dust-free in a meaningful way — but only when paired with the right extractor. More on that below.

The dust extractor — another two-step journey

The Mirka connects directly to a dust extractor, and getting the extraction right is just as important as the sander itself. In a workshop where your laser lenses, mirrors and mechanics need to stay clean, sawdust in the air is a real problem.

I started with the Bosch Professional GAS 20 L SFC Wet/Dry Extractor. It's a competent machine, but I was still finding too much residual dust in the workshop. The other problem that crept up over time: the fleece filter bags became increasingly hard to source. Running out of bags when you're mid-production is the kind of frustration that's entirely avoidable with the right setup.

The switch was to the Metabo dust extractor. The difference was immediate. More capacity, more powerful extraction — it's a true powerhouse. It fills up just as fast as the Bosch, but that's because it's pulling substantially more dust. The result is a noticeably cleaner workshop, no more dust issues, and no more hunting for proprietary filter bags.

The Mirka and Metabo connected together is the combination I'd buy if I were starting again.

Why the sander and extractor matter in a laser workshop specifically

Laser engraving produces a burnt surface on wood — that's the nature of the process and part of what gives the result its character. But the surrounding wood surface often benefits from preparation before engraving and occasionally finishing after. A consistent, smooth surface gives cleaner engraving results. And airborne dust from sanding without proper extraction will settle on your laser lens and mirrors, degrading cut quality and shortening component life.

Getting the sanding and extraction right is part of protecting your laser, not just finishing your timber.
