Wooden Staff Only Sign

Wooden Signs for Schools: A Practical Guide to Classroom, Wayfinding and Door Signage

Wooden signs help schools create a calm, consistent and welcoming environment — from classroom door signs and wayfinding around the site to accessibility, safeguarding and policy notices. This guide covers the main types of school signage, where each one works best, and what to think about on material, durability and ordering across a whole site.

Why schools choose wooden signs

Wooden signage gives a warmer, more considered look than mass-produced plastic or acrylic, and it holds up well to daily life indoors. Each sign can be engraved with your school name, crest or a specific room name, so corridors, classrooms and offices share one consistent style. As a natural alternative to plastic, wood is also an easy win for schools working towards eco goals or an Eco-Schools Green Flag. All of our signs are designed for indoor use.

The main types of school signs

Classroom and door signs. Room names, year groups, teacher names and status signs such as "Lesson in Progress", "Exam in Progress" or "Please Do Not Disturb" help reduce interruptions and protect teaching time.

Wayfinding and room identification. Clear signs for reception, the school office, library, hall, staff room and toilets help visitors, supply staff and new pupils find their way without asking.

Accessibility signs. Accessible toilet, hearing loop and quiet-room signage make a site easier to navigate for everyone. See our accessibility signs for the full range.

Policy and safeguarding notices. Visitor sign-in reminders, "No Mobile Phones", "No Smoking or Vaping" and similar notices set expectations politely but clearly.

Staff name badges and lanyards. Engraved wooden name badges identify teachers, teaching assistants and visitors at a glance. Browse our school badges and lanyards.

Awards and recognition. Wooden medals, rosettes and trophies are popular for sports day, reading challenges and end-of-year achievements — see our school medals, rosettes and trophies.

Choosing a material

Most school signs are made from 4mm oak veneered MDF, which engraves to a consistent dark finish and suits almost any setting. For a lighter, contemporary look we also offer FSC-certified Moso bamboo (certificate RINA-COC-001256), which is a little more moisture-resistant — useful near sinks or in food-technology rooms. Freestanding desk and reception signs are available as solid oak blocks. All signs are for indoor use.

Ordering signage for a whole school

Ordering is self-serve and built for quantity. Add your wording in the personalisation box, and use the logo upload button to add your school crest — black-and-white artwork engraves most sharply, though most colour logos convert well. Bulk discounts apply automatically in the basket from 20 units and increase with quantity, so kitting out every classroom or a full corridor works out more cost-effective than buying piecemeal.

All items are made to order. Dispatch time is shown at checkout. UK orders are sent via Royal Mail Tracked 24, and international orders via Royal Mail International Tracked.
