Is a bilingual no smoking sign legally required?
For an ordinary café, pub, shop or workplace in Wales, no. Under regulation 13 of the Smoke-free Premises and Vehicles (Wales) Regulations 2020, you only need at least one legible sign showing the crossed-through cigarette symbol — there's no prescribed wording and no language requirement. Vaping isn't covered by smoke-free legislation at all, so a no-vaping notice is a house-policy choice, not a legal one.
Wales does have a genuine bilingual, fixed-wording requirement — it just sits elsewhere. Regulation 14 of the same Regulations sets out exact statutory English/Welsh text for signs at school grounds, hospital grounds and public playgrounds specifically (different wording again for each). This sign isn't that — it's a general-purpose hospitality and retail notice. Choose a bilingual sign like this one because it's a genuine courtesy to Welsh-speaking customers and staff and a mark of local identity, not because it's required by law.
How to use this sign
Print at 100% on white paper or suitable durable media. Position it where staff and visitors can genuinely see it — near an entrance or in a prominent shared space works well for most premises. Laminating or displaying behind glass or in a frame will keep it presentable for longer than loose paper.
