Why We Made a 5mm Premium Bamboo Range

We introduced a 5mm premium bamboo range because 3mm bamboo has a specific, documented weakness: it is genuinely strong along its fibres, but prone to splitting when real pressure is applied across the grain. That is a structural property of bamboo itself, not a fault with any supplier or batch. Thickness is the direct engineering answer to it — a thicker cross-section gives a crack more material to work through before it can propagate. This is the whole reason the range exists, and it is also why one keyring size we could never previously offer in bamboo is now possible.
The problem we kept seeing
Bamboo has been part of our range for a long time, and for most of what we make in it, 3mm works well. Coasters, name badges, smaller keyrings, door hangers in normal use — it is hard, it engraves to a rich dark finish, it is naturally water-resistant, and it carries genuine FSC Chain of Custody certification through our supplier's certificate, RINA-COC-001256.
But there is a failure mode that shows up under a particular kind of stress. Bamboo's internal structure is bundles of fibre running the length of the culm, bonded together by comparatively weak connective tissue. Force applied along those fibres is handled well. Force applied across them can start a crack that then runs along the fibre direction with relatively little resistance. In practice that means a sideways knock on a door hanger, or a keyring caught the wrong way in a pocket or a car door.

Why thickness is the right fix
There are only a few ways to address a splitting weakness in a sheet material. You can change material entirely — which loses everything bamboo is good at. You can change the grain orientation, which laminated bamboo board already does as far as it practically can. Or you can increase the cross-section.
Increasing thickness works because crack propagation is a question of how much material a crack has to travel through. A 5mm section gives meaningfully more resistance to the same lateral force than a 3mm section of the same material. It does not make bamboo behave like oak veneered MDF, which has no grain direction at all and therefore no directional weakness — but it substantially narrows the gap for the products most likely to take a knock.
The secondary effect is one you notice immediately in the hand rather than on a spec sheet: 5mm bamboo is heavier. A keyring in 5mm has a weight to it that reads as substantial rather than lightweight. That was not the design goal, but it is the part customers comment on first.
The keyring size that only exists because of this
The clearest proof of the point is a product we could not make before. A 100×50mm oval keyring in 3mm bamboo is too vulnerable at that size — the larger the unsupported area, the more leverage a knock across the grain has. We had the oak version of this keyring for years and no bamboo equivalent, and that was the reason.
Our 5mm bamboo business keyring exists because the thicker stock made that size viable. It sits alongside the 100×50mm oak version as a genuine material alternative rather than a substitute — bamboo for water resistance and the fastest-renewing material we use, oak veneer for a warmer, more traditional wood-grain look.
The same applies to our 5mm bamboo door hanger, which sits alongside the original 3mm bamboo door hanger. Door hangers live on handles, get knocked past by trolleys and luggage, and are handled by a different guest every day — exactly the use case the thicker stock was chosen for.
What 5mm does not change
Three things are worth being clear about, because a thicker material is not a different material.
- Sustainability is unchanged. Both thicknesses are FSC-certified Moso bamboo from the same certified supply, certificate RINA-COC-001256. More material per item is used, which is an honest trade-off against a longer service life.
- The finish is unchanged. Bamboo is left with its natural surface in both thicknesses. We do not oil bamboo the way we oil oak, because the finish behaves differently on bamboo's fibre structure.
- 3mm is not being retired. For coasters, badges and smaller keyrings it remains a well-priced, genuinely capable option. The 5mm range is for products that see rougher handling, not a replacement for the existing range.

Frequently asked questions
Is 5mm bamboo stronger than 3mm bamboo?
It is more resistant to the specific failure mode bamboo is vulnerable to — splitting under pressure applied across the grain. The material itself is identical; the thicker cross-section gives a crack more material to work through before it can propagate.
Should I choose 5mm or 3mm?
Choose 5mm for anything likely to take a knock or see daily handling by different people — keyrings, door hangers, items carried in pockets or bags. Choose 3mm for coasters, name badges and smaller keyrings, where it performs well and costs less.
Is the 5mm range also FSC certified?
Yes. Both thicknesses are FSC-certified Moso bamboo from the same certified supply chain, under our supplier's Chain of Custody certificate RINA-COC-001256. Cherry Grove Craft is not itself an FSC certificate holder — we use certified material and are clear about where that certification sits.
Why was the 100×50mm bamboo keyring not available before?
At that size, 3mm bamboo has too much unsupported area to reliably resist splitting under everyday handling. The 5mm stock made the size viable, which is why it only appeared with this range.
Is 5mm bamboo much more expensive?
The price difference is small relative to the difference in durability and feel, which is why we would generally point people towards it for anything handled daily.
