Frequently asked questions

What do Ar Agor and Ar Gau mean?
Ar Agor means "open" and Ar Gau means "closed" in Welsh. The sign is double-sided, so you simply turn it round — the same way an English open and closed sign works.

Is the English wording on it too?
This version carries the Welsh wording, which is instantly understood alongside the familiar open/closed sign format. If you'd prefer English wording, see our standard open and closed sign. Do Welsh businesses have to display bilingual signage?
Not generally. Welsh Language Standards under the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 place duties on public bodies — councils, health boards, schools and colleges — rather than on private shops and cafés. Most private businesses in Wales use bilingual signage by choice, as a mark of local identity. Bilingual wording is a genuine legal requirement in a narrower case: no-smoking signage at school grounds, hospital grounds and public playgrounds, which carries fixed statutory English/Welsh text under separate regulations. An ordinary café or shop's no-smoking sign only needs the crossed-cigarette symbol — no wording requirement at all.
