What a CCTV sign should say

The Information Commissioner's Office does not prescribe a format, but expects a CCTV sign to make four things clear: that CCTV is in operation, who operates it, why, and how to contact the operator. A sign reading only “CCTV in Operation” covers the first. To cover the rest, add your business or household name, a short purpose such as “for crime prevention and safety”, and an email address or phone number in the personalisation box — the Large and Extra Large sizes give the most room. Do I legally need a CCTV sign?
If your camera records anyone outside your own household — customers, guests, staff, or passers-by on the street — yes. UK GDPR requires that people are told they are being recorded, and a visible sign is how that is done. A home camera that only sees your own property is exempt, though a sign is still recommended.

Does it need to be at every entrance?
Yes — one sign at each entrance to a monitored area, visible before someone walks into the camera's field of view.

Can I add my company name and contact details?
Yes. Add them in the personalisation box and they are engraved alongside the standard wording.
