Railway Station Signs: Sizes, the Three Text Lines and Model Scales
Share
A personalised railway station sign is a three-line oak nameboard โ railway or depot on the top line, station name in capitals across the middle, a date, platform or message along the bottom โ in four sizes from 200ร50mm to 580ร146mm. The Small size is the one most model railway owners buy; the Medium and Large suit a door or study wall; the long service version carries a name and years of service for a railway retirement. This guide covers which size to choose, what to put on each line, and how the signs are made and fixed.
Which size for which use
- Small, 200ร50mm โ the model railway choice. Too large to be a true scale platform board in OO (1:76) or N (1:148), it works as a layout name board on the fascia, a backscene feature or a display label beside the layout. On O and G gauge it sits closer to scale.
- Medium, 290ร73mm โ a door sign for a study, games room, shed or workshop, or a cabinet piece above a layout.
- Large, 415ร105mm โ a wall nameboard that reads across a room; the usual choice for a home office or garage.
- Extra Large, 580ร146mm โ the closest to a real station board for a hallway, bar or club room.
What to put on the three lines
The original British Railways enamel boards carried the station name alone, with the region shown by colour. An engraved oak version has no colour, so the top and bottom lines do that work. Common combinations:
- Model layout: fictional railway company on top, layout or station name in the middle, "Est. 1962" or the gauge underneath.
- Home or office: "Platform 1" on top, the room or family name in the middle, "Mind the gap" or the house number underneath.
- Long service or retirement: depot, line or company on top, the recipient's name in the middle, "40 Years' Service โ 1985 to 2025" underneath.
One or two lines is fine; whatever you give us is centred. Type the lines in the personalisation box in the order you want them engraved, top to bottom.
The three versions
- Custom Model Railway Station Sign โ the layout and display version.
- Personalised Railway Station Sign โ the full-size nameboard for rooms, doors and workshops.
- Railway Long Service & Retirement Award Sign โ the presentation version for railway staff.
All three are the same nameboard format and sizes; the difference is the ordering guidance and the wording we expect on each line. They are listed together in the railway station signs collection.
How they are made and fixed
Each sign is laser-engraved into FSC-certified 4mm oak veneered MDF in our workshop in North Wales โ engraved, never printed, so the lettering is cut into the surface and cannot peel. The lettering reads as dark engraving on natural oak, not the cream-on-colour of an enamel original, and we do not reproduce railway company logos or trademarks. The back is flat: fix with sticky pads or an adhesive of your choice (not supplied). There are no hanging holes, which keeps the face uninterrupted. Indoor use only; oak veneered MDF does not tolerate damp.

Frequently asked questions
Which size is right for an OO gauge layout?
Small, 200ร50mm. It is not a scale platform board โ that would be a few centimetres long โ but a layout name board or display label. For O and G gauge the Medium sits closer to scale.
Can I have a real station name?
Yes. Real, closed, fictional or invented names all engrave the same way. We don't reproduce railway company logos or trademarks.
Are the signs in the original regional colours?
No. They are engraved into oak, so the finish is dark lettering on natural wood rather than enamel colours.
How do I fix one to a door?
The back is flat โ use sticky pads or adhesive, not supplied. There are no holes or string.
What should a railway retirement sign say?
Depot, line or company on the top line, the recipient's name in the middle, years of service and dates underneath โ for example "40 Years' Service, 1985โ2025".
