Personalised oak Christmas bauble engraved with a short message inside a cut-out heart border, hung on jute string

What to Write on a Personalised Christmas Bauble: 60 Message Ideas

Keep it short. A name, a year and three to six words is what reads best on a 10cm bauble, and the year matters most: it is what makes the bauble worth unpacking again in twenty Christmases. Below are 60 message ideas grouped by who the bauble is for, plus how much text each of our bauble designs takes.

Every bauble we make is laser engraved to order in our workshop in North Wales, most of them on 4mm FSC-certified oak veneered MDF. What you type in the personalisation box is engraved exactly as you type it, so treat the wording below as a starting point: change the names, swap the year and say it in your own voice.

How much text fits on a bauble

Each design leaves a different amount of room. These are the amounts that engrave at a comfortable size:

Bauble Size Comfortable wording
Message in a Bauble 100 × 112mm Up to three short lines, about 40 characters in total
Engraved hearts bauble 112 × 103mm A name, with about six words beneath
Tree-shaped bauble 82 × 121mm Two short lines, such as a name and a year
Paw print and dog breed baubles 100 × 112mm A name of up to about 12 characters
Baby's First Christmas bauble 100mm round A name, plus the year if you want it
Day We First Met bauble 100mm round Two names and a date, under a heading you can change

Longer wording still fits on every design, but the lettering gets smaller to make room. If a message won't fit comfortably, it belongs in the card rather than on the bauble.

Three rules for bauble wording

  1. Lead with the name. It is what people look for when the decorations come out of the box.
  2. Add the year. A bauble outlasts the memory of which Christmas it marked. "2026" takes four characters and saves the guessing later.
  3. One thought per bauble. "Our first Christmas together" works. "Our first Christmas together in our new home with Bella the dog" needs three baubles, or a card.

Baby's first Christmas

  1. Elsie's First Christmas, 2026
  2. Our first Christmas as a family of three
  3. Welcome to the world, Noah
  4. Our little star, Christmas 2026
  5. First Christmas, first of many
  6. Santa's newest helper
  7. Born 2026, loved always
  8. Our first Christmas with Arlo

The Baby's First Christmas bauble is already engraved with "First Christmas", snowflakes and a pair of baby socks, so it needs only the name and year. To engrave a real handprint, the baby handprint Christmas bauble walks you through taking one with an ink pad; if you already have a print from the hospital or nursery, the baby handprint bauble is engraved straight from a photo of it.

Children and grandchildren

  1. Mia, aged 4, Christmas 2026
  2. On the nice list since 2019
  3. Elf in training
  4. Santa, please stop here
  5. Made by Leo, aged 6
  6. Grandma's little star
  7. Merry Christmas from Nanny and Grandad
  8. Nice List (with Naughty List on the back)

A bauble a year with the child's age on it builds into a set that charts them growing up. The Naughty or Nice List bauble is engraved with the child's name on both faces, "Nice List" on one and "Naughty List" on the other, so it can be turned round as December goes on; it also comes in FSC-certified Moso bamboo (certificate BV-COC-190523). For a picture the child draws, the design your own Christmas bauble takes a drawing they make now and the design your own wooden bauble takes one you already have. The gingerbread man bauble (also in birch plywood) and the snowflake bauble take a name.

Couples

  1. Our first Christmas together
  2. Our first Christmas as Mr & Mrs
  3. Our first Christmas as Mrs & Mrs, or Mr & Mr
  4. Engaged! Christmas 2026
  5. Our first Christmas in our first home
  6. Still my favourite present
  7. Home is wherever you are
  8. The day we first met, 14.02.2019

The Day We First Met bauble carries that heading with your two names and the date; you can swap the heading for "The day we said yes" or "Our wedding day". For your own words, Message in a Bauble fits up to three short lines inside a hearts or stars border cut right through the wood, so the tree lights show through. If you have a song, the Christmas playlist bauble and Mix of the Year bauble carry a QR code linking to a playlist. There is more couple wording in what to engrave on an anniversary gift.

  4. Nice list (mostly)

Our breed baubles have the dog's silhouette cut through the wood with the name engraved beneath, and we make them for 13 breeds, from Chihuahua to German Shepherd. The paw print bauble covers any dog or cat we don't make a silhouette for, and there are cat, horse, rabbit and guinea pig designs too. Those take the pet's name only, so for a message like the ones above, use Message in a Bauble or the engraved hearts bauble. Browse them all in personalised Christmas baubles.

Welsh messages

We're based in North Wales, and Welsh wording is a common request. Type accented letters such as ŵ and ŷ exactly as you want them engraved.

  1. Nadolig Llawen, Gwen (Merry Christmas, Gwen)
  2. Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda (Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year)
  3. Nadolig Llawen, cariad (cariad means love, or darling)
  4. Hiraeth, Christmas 2026 (a longing for home, for someone spending Christmas away from Wales)

The Nadolig Llawen bauble engraves a child's own drawing beneath the greeting, and the Welsh dragon bauble carries "Yma o Hyd" ("still here") on birch plywood. More Welsh words worth engraving are in our Welsh gift ideas guide.

From a teacher

  1. Star of Year 3, 2026
  2. Merry Christmas from Mrs Evans
  3. Thank you for a brilliant term
  4. Oliver, Robins Class, 2026

The school Christmas baubles come in five designs and the student recognition bauble carries a name and class year; both take a spreadsheet of names, so a class set needs no typing. Our guide to Christmas gifts for pupils from their teacher covers ordering for a whole class.

Someone you're missing

A bauble with a name on it is one of the gentlest ways to keep someone part of Christmas. Bereavement charity Cruse suggests hanging something of theirs on the tree, or adding a decoration with their name or picture.

  1. Missing you this Christmas, Mum
  2. Always in our hearts
  3. Forever in our hearts, Grandad
  4. John, 1948–2025
  5. Loved always, never forgotten
  6. Christmas isn't the same without you
  7. Forever loved, forever missed
  8. Our little angel, always with us

The engraved hearts bauble leads with a name and takes about six words beneath, which suits most of these. Message in a Bauble with the hearts border is the other usual choice. For a pet, the paw print bauble with a hearts border is the usual choice. If Christmas is hard this year, Cruse Bereavement Support's helpline is 0808 808 1677.

Frequently asked questions

What should I write on a personalised Christmas bauble?
A name, a year and a short phrase of three to six words, such as "Our first Christmas together, 2026". The name is what people look for, and the year dates the bauble for every Christmas after.

How many words fit on a Christmas bauble?
On our 10cm baubles, about 40 characters over three short lines on Message in a Bauble, a name and about six words on the engraved hearts bauble, and a name of up to about 12 characters on the paw print and dog breed baubles. Longer wording fits, but the lettering gets smaller.

Should I put the year on a bauble?
Yes. A bauble is unpacked every Christmas for years, and the year is what tells you which Christmas it marked. It takes only four characters.

What do you write on a memorial bauble?
The person's name with a short line, such as "Missing you this Christmas", "Always in our hearts" or their name and years, for example "John, 1948–2025".

What is Merry Christmas in Welsh?
Nadolig Llawen. "Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda" means Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
